A parishioner who church leaders said had been acting strangely was ordered held on $1 million bail for allegedly setting a fire inside Edgebrook Lutheran Church, Chicago, in late January.
James Deichman, a retired postal worker, was found inside the church and arrested, according to reports. Damage to the 66-year-old brick church was estimated at $1 million.
"I know it's just a building. But the sanctuary and the stained glass, and the history of it all is just beautiful," member Rebecca Hennessy told reporters. "My heart is just broken."
