ELCA staff and Lutherans from its partner churches in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe attended a January meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, to plan work under the Lutheran Malaria Initiative.
The disease, according to the World Health Organization, claims 1 million lives a year, 90 percent of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa will distribute grants to its member churches for their work to prevent and control malaria.
