'I remember when'

Helping older folks tell their stories binds us together

Before my grandmother died several years ago, I often urged her to talk about growing up in Idaho when it was still little more than frontier. Unfortunately, my vague encouragement usually led to familiar anecdotes or dead-ends. When she was gone, a lot of family history went with her.

I wish I Remember When: Activity Ideas to Help People Reminisce (Elderbooks, 2000) would have been available then. Howard Thorsheim and Bruce Roberts, psychology professors at St.Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., designed this handbook for use by families and churches, as well as at retirement homes.
