Earthquakes in November and December left thousands of people homeless in Malawi's northern region of Karonga, bordering Tanzania.
At the same time, a cyclone and heavy rain struck southern Malawi, devastating the harvest.
Joseph Bvumbwe, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi, said the earthquakes directly affected church members in Karonga.
