Eboo Patel is the first Muslim to win the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Religion from Louisville [Ky.] Presbyterian Seminary and the University of Louisville.
Patel, 34, is the founder and executive director of Interfaith Youth Core, a community service group.
Nearly 70 people were nominated for the $200,000 prize.
Patel won for his 2007 autobiography, Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation (Beacon Press, 2009).
