Andrew Weisner (left), Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C., campus pastor, admires some of the nearly 1,000 crosses collected by Stanley Stiver, a retired pastor.

Courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne University. After 50 years of collecting crosses from around the world, Stiver, 88, has donated most to Lenoir-Rhyne; St. Mark Lutheran Church, Claremont, N.C.; two nursing homes; and other organizations.

Over the years, Stiver has studied the history of crosses and given more than 300 talks about his collection.
