$2 million-plus

Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. awarded nearly $1 million to the ELCA to help the church understand and address seminarian debt.

The churchwide organization and partner institutions are matching the grant with $1.1 million.

These funds will mobilize the church to help students at the denomination's eight seminaries with debt prevention through enhanced financial education and scholarship programs.

"This project will work in concert with synod programs for rostered leaders already in service," said Jonathan Strandjord, director for theological education, ELCA Vocation and Education.

Paul N. Hanson, director of the ELCA Fund for Leaders, said the Lilly grant will also address how to improve "the whole economy of seminary education."
