Now what?

Reeling in Grandma & Gramps

Q: I'm trying to plan a simpler Christmas for my family this year, but my children's grandparents always buy a ton of gifts for them. What should I do?

A: Talk with your children's grandparents. Explain that you're cutting back on presents, and ask them to consider giving your children "experience gifts." If Grandma is a nature buff, she could take the kids on a walk and explain what she loves about certain plants or trees. If Grandpa is the family's genealogist, ask him to tell stories while watching old family movies or thumbing through photo albums with his grandkids.
