Worship grows artificial when deep parts of our lives are excluded

Sometimes you find what you really need when you're not looking for it. I found what I need at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio.

Turning left just inside the entry, I stepped into a dark prayer chapel. It doesn't amount to much — a cross, a kneeler, a few candles, a place to stand and pray. It's small: five steps and you pass through it. I would have done just that but for the faces on the wall that stopped me midstride.

People come here to pray and pin photos of their beloved to the wall — family members, friends, some living, some gone, old, young, the obviously ill or troubled, and others whose smiles mask unspoken needs.
