Physician Prem Kumar (left) examines Minik Mandailink at a YAKKUM Emergency Unit health post five days after a Sept. 30 earthquake struck Indonesia, killing more than 1,100 people. Mandailink, 80, was up to his neck in the rubble of his house. To help survivors, the ELCA sent an initial $30,000 to YEU, a Christian health-care and disaster response organization that deployed medical personnel and distributed tents and other supplies. A companion church of the ELCA, the Protestant Christian Batak Church, is also assessing needs.
