The Lutheran World Federation Council voted 37-5 to elect Martin Junge, 48, as LWF general secretary, effective July 2010. No others were considered during the Oct. 26 election. Junge, a Chilean pastor, is the current head of the LWF Department for Mission and Development's Latin America and Caribbean section. He replaces Zimbabwean theologian Ishmael Noko, who is retiring. Junge said he will strengthen relationships between LWF members and continue Noko's concern for ecumenism.
