College musicians combine music & mission

It wasn’t your typical spring break mission trip. On the Circle of Music Tour, the only construction was the set up and teardown of amps, monitors and soundboards. The only axes swung were guitars.

Twelve students and two faculty members from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, made up Hope Overflow, a 14-piece worship band that — after six weeks of rehearsal and Bible study — hit the road for spring break 2009 to play at homeless shelters and food kitchens and for after-school programs.

“Our goal was to find places where music could lift hearts and give hope,” said Michael Jensen, a voice professor and the group’s leader.
