Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and School, Plainview, N.Y., won the 2009 Carbon Reduction Campaign Challenge from the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Program. After an energy audit, the congregation added insulation, switched to fluorescent bulbs and installed programmable thermostats in its six buildings. The NCC estimated the congregation reduced its carbon footprint by 26,200 pounds. "Over the years, we have reduced our energy consumption by 25 percent, saving about $18,000 per year," said member Odd Sangesland.
