In former East Germany, 80 parishes in 18 cities held prayer services to mark the 20 years since the opening of the Berlin Wall. Bishop Ilse Junkermann of the Protestant Church in Central Germany, said, "Twenty years ago people found a place in the churches to formulate their discontent [and] the protests became a peaceful revolution of candles and prayers." In 2009 prayers addressed current problems in Germany and remembered "how faith can bring about change," Junkermann said.
