Justification accord marked

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson joins Cardinal Francis George of Chicago (center) and Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta at a service marking the 10th anniversary of the signing of the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification."

The agreement was reached by representatives of the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church in Augsburg, Germany. It declared the two bodies agreed that believers are saved by faith in Jesus Christ and not by works. The World Methodist Council affirmed the declaration in 2006. Some 300 people gathered in Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago in early October to mark the anniversary, including the ELCA Conference of Bishops, Methodist representatives and several ecumenical guests.
