After Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan Aug. 7-9, the ELCA committed up to $25,000 for relief to be implemented by the Taiwan Lutheran Church and Action By Churches Together. Chiayi Christian Hospital is providing short- and long-term medical assistance in the Alishan Mountain area and helping seniors affected in the Chiayi area. Other ELCA companions, the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Sichuan Council of Churches in China, are also responding to the disaster, which killed more than 540 people in mud landslides in the south, destroyed farmland and blocked roads.
