In 2008 floods swept through Cedar Rapids, Iowa, destroying homes, businesses and places of worship. A year later, children gathered there at First Lutheran Church for Camp Noah, which gives children affected by disasters a sense of hope and release from tension. The camp featured a local weatherman who explained thunder and lightning and a visit from therapy dogs. Participants also assembled preparedness kits, which included quilts from First’s Comfort Makers. The camp was staffed by St. Andrew Lutheran, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; First and St. Andrew, Cedar Rapids; and St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, Iowa.
