Lean times result in slimmed down budgets

Income expected to fall over next two years

With income expected to fall for churchwide organization budgets the next two years, the Churchwide Assembly approved a current fund income level of $76.69 million for 2010, a 6.4 percent decrease from the budget adopted two years ago for 2009.

The 863-71 vote also authorized an income proposal of $76.78 million for 2011. Further approved by the ballot were income goals of $18.7 million and $19 million for the ELCA World Hunger program for 2010 and 2011, respectively.

M. Wyvetta Bullock, ELCA executive for administration, told the assembly that mission support makes up 81.2 percent of the ELCA’s current operating income. Mission support funds are provided by congregations to the 65 synods of the church, which share a percentage of those funds with the churchwide organization.
