'It is the Lord'

God gently guides us in everyday life

Frank Laubach, the renowned missionary who developed the worldwide literacy program known as "each one teach one," was intensely interested in what he called "learning the vocabulary of God." He wrote about his experiments in noticing how God spoke to him amid his everyday life. He discovered: "I find Thee best when I work listening, not when I am still or meditative or even on my knees in prayer."

We decided to try Laubach's experiment for a week. We committed to watching for messages from God coming through our ordinary activities. We knew going into this spiritual practice that we should be able to discern the Spirit's presence in everything that happens to us. But we admitted that we had to be very intentional about listening because too often we are too busy or tired to notice God's presence.
