Lutherans have been ministering to those affected by the May 12, 2008, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on an agriprocessor plant in Postville, Iowa (February, page 14). Agents arrested 390 workers that day. Seven Mexican and Guatemalan men who were among those arrested wrote a play about the experience. “La Historia de Nuestras Vida” (The Story of Our Lives) was performed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis on July 10.

Yes, Scripture calls us to ! love and welcome strangers. But the Bible is quite clear that we "are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born" (Leviticus 24:22). And those laws are designed for the safety of U.S. citizens--not the satisfaction of global tolerance.
