William E. Lesher, ELCA pastor and chair, board of trustees, 2009 Parliament of the World's Religions

Eleven years after he retired as president of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, William E. Lesher finds himself working “at least a half-time job” on the Parliament of the World’s Religions that is expected to draw some 8,000 people from 70 faiths to Melbourne, Australia, in December.

As convener of the 2004 Parliament
As convener of the 2004 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Barcelona, Spain, William Lesher presents an award for outstanding contributions to the international interreligious movement to Bishop Macleord Ochola of Uganda.
He’s the chair of the board of trustees, a responsibility that requires considerable time away from his Berkeley, Calif., home. He calls the post “a labor of love, a privilege to use my global contacts and life experience to represent the Parliament around the world.”
