India’s government denied visas for commissioners of a U.S. religious freedom watchdog group to travel to the country in June.
The members have been trying to get visas for the last seven years. One commissioner, Nina Shea, said authorities were overly defensive. “I believe at the root of this, they want to cover it up,” she said. “They have something to hide.”
One Indian news outlet, the Navbharat Times, reports that Hindu groups are leery of the group’s intentions and fear attacks on their “religious sovereignty.”
