At the end of June, Unitarian Universalists began “Standing on the Side of Love,” a campaign against hate crimes.
Leaders want to rally their 1,000 congregations to counter some 7,500 U.S.-based hate crimes against individuals because of their race, religion, political ideology or sexual orientation.
In 2008, a gunman murdered two people and wounded seven others at a Knoxville, Tenn., congregation, telling authorities he was upset by Unitarian acceptance of homosexuality and other liberal causes.
