After more than 30 years in youth ministry, Larry Wagner, senior pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, Thousand Oaks, Calif., responds to The Lutheran’s request to share his wisdom:

Ministry tips for adults who work with youth

1. Be yourself — youth can see through an attempt to “be cool” in a heartbeat.

2. Be consistent.

3. Use your “quiet voice.” Shouting just doesn’t work.

4. Model what you’re trying to teach.

5. “Do what I say, not what I do” went out of style a long time ago.
