A berry good grower

Scientist creates varieties for flavor and resilience

To members of Peace Lutheran Church, Puyallup, Wash., Patrick Moore is “the berry guy” — with good reason. For 22 years the member has been a cultivator of strawberries and raspberries for Washington State University in Puyallup.

That means part of his duties include creating new varieties of the two sweet, red fruits that will be adaptable to the Northwest. Disease resistance, color and taste are just a few of the characteristics that Moore considers.

How did he prepare for a life in berries? For Moore it began at age 12 in the Portland area, where he spent summers picking a variety of fruits. His educational focus was on forestry, including a doctorate with an emphasis on plant breeding at Michigan State University, Lansing.
