Tools for building faith

Elora Barrett is 10 years old and her sister, Sara, is only 4, but they already have toolboxes they use every day to work on things at home.

Their ACE Hardware boxes aren't filled with gadgets for plumbing or drywall projects. These boxes contain items they use to build faith in their daily lives while away from their congregation, Faith Lutheran in Phoenix. In this case, the ACE Hardware emblem stands for "Active Christian Education."

"We give the children a personalized faith chest," says Linda Staats, who works on faith development. She brought this idea to the congregation after attending a 1995 "Child in Our Hands" workshop led by the Youth & Family Institute of Augsburg College, Minneapolis.
