Most Americans probably didn’t know much — if anything — about the secretary of the U.S. Senate, even though there have been fewer secretaries than U.S. presidents.
But the current secretary, Nancy Erickson, made headlines in January when, following procedure, she rejected the appointment of Roland Burris as Illinois senator. The request made by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is facing corruption charges, wasn’t signed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, making the appointment unofficial.

Erickson wasn’t looking for the limelight. The member of Reformation Lutheran Church, Washington, D.C., was simply continuing her dream of working in the nation’s capital, which she formed in high school.
