Recognizing genocide

National Council of Churches general secretary Michael Kinnamon urged U.S. lawmakers to formally recognize as genocide the mass deaths of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century.

Turkey’s government, the successor to the Ottoman Empire, denies that genocide occurred.

During his election campaign, President Barack Obama promised to recognize the events as genocide, but is seen by some Armenian Americans as stepping back from that commitment after an April visit to Turkey.
