Gustav Niebuhr, religion journalist and Syracuse [N.Y.] University associate professor, said it’s “a terrible irony that religion is so prominent in the world and yet so absent from the news.”
Speaking to the Associated Church Press and the Evangelical Press Association at their joint May meeting in Indianapolis, Niebuhr said newspapers have cut religion news during the recession.
Church journalists and publications are left to tell the stories, he said, adding, “I cannot think of a time when your work is more important.”
