If Carol and Robert Relitz do their jobs well, few people notice. But if they make a mistake, they hear about it—likely in boos and sarcastic shouts.
That’s because the couple from Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, Ind., are umpires for the U.S. Tennis Association Midwest Section. Few sports are as difficult to umpire as tennis, where a single point — often decided by a ball being less than an inch in or out — can make the difference between victory and defeat.
