Reaching out to Uganda

Children from a Colorado congregation know what it means to reach out.

Children from Christ Lutheran Church, Highlands Ranch, Colo., know what it means to reach out to others. In the past, they’ve given their Sunday school offerings to support the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and the Children’s Hospital in Denver. Now they’re sponsoring students in Uganda.

Their offerings go to Outreach Uganda, founded by Christ member Carol Davis to assist poor people in that country. One effort involves sponsoring children whose mothers become self-sufficient by selling their beaded creations in the U.S. A sponsorship helps pay the $125 annually it takes to send a child to school ($600 to $700 for a high school student).

Thanks to the Sunday school, Lucky Aciro, 8, can attend school and pay for supplies and exam fees. All of the classes have discussed the value of education for girls in Africa. And the fifth- and sixth-graders write to Lucky and pray for her safety as she travels to school.

As the school year continued, they added Edison Lubangankene, 14, to their sponsorship and letter-writing.
