Madagascar struggle

At the end of April, ELCA mission personnel had yet to return to Madagascar.

They were evacuated in March after violence followed the installation of opposition leader Andry Rajoelina as president.

Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop and Lutheran World Federation president, and Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director of ELCA Global Mission, wrote to Endor Modeste Rakoto, president of the Malagasy Lutheran Church, communicating “the desire for peace.”

Other church organizations, including the World Association for Reformed Churches, also called for peace and for international pressure to secure democracy in Madagascar.
