Jewish seminaries struggle too

Facing a $3 million deficit, a Jewish Reform seminary may decide in June whether to close two of its three campuses in Cincinnati, Los Angeles and New York.

The Los Angeles Times reported April 17 that the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion has seen decreasing dues from Reform congregations, pension fund problems and a declining endowment.

David Ellenson, president, said the financial challenge was unprecedented — “even more so than during the Depression.”
