Update: 'Drop the Debt'

The year 2000 is history--but not Jubilee 2000, the worldwide effort to bring debt relief to the world's poorest nations. A successor organization recently formed. In the states, it's the Jubilee USA Network (www.j2000usa.org), which the Lutheran Office for Governmental Affairs and Lutheran World Relief have joined.

The "Drop the Debt" campaign under way urges President Bush to keep his campaign promise to cancel debts of Third World countries.

The Jubilee 2000/USA Campaign had bipartisan support in Congress to cancel 100 percent of the bilateral debt of more than 30 heavily indebted poor countries.

To fulfill this commitment, the 107th Congress must approve $375 million in the next two years.
