To encourage youth in its Sunset Park neighborhood to consider medical careers, Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y., offers the “O.R. to the Schools” program.
The 45-minute, hands-on demonstration includes performing a mock appendectomy after learning about the roles of anesthesiologists, technologists and nurses.
“Especially in Latino and African-American communities, it’s important for our young people to see health-care professionals who look like them and to let them know of goals that are achievable,” said Jose Hernandez, vice president of surgical services.
