From January to March 2009, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) laid off 44 employees to close a $9.92 million budget shortfall.
And in March, the Christian Reformed Church in North America froze salaries and reduced pension benefits to cut its budget by $2.5 million; the Church of the Brethren cut programs by nearly $1 million and anticipated staff reductions; and the Baptist World Alliance, a fellowship of 214 global Baptist bodies, reduced its budget by 35 percent.
