Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment gave about $11 million to 16 Protestant regional denominational bodies to help them address the economic problems faced by some of their pastors.
The grants will be used to educate congregations about the financial pressures pastors face, give relief to pastors in some cases and provide financial planning.
Relief funds provided by the grants will be matched by donations from congregations and other sources.
Two denominations will receive more than $5 million while 14 other regional bodies, including Lutherans, will share about $6 million.
