A Jesuit (Roman Catholic) province spanning five states in the Northwest U.S. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, following lawsuits brought by plaintiffs alleging sexual abuse by priests.
Provincial leaders cited nine active suits in Alaska, Idaho and Washington, as well as 200 other claims “pending or threatened.”
Patrick J. Lee of the Jesuits of Oregon Province called it “the only way we believe that all claimants can be offered a fair financial settlement within the [province’s] limited resources.”
