Zion Lutheran Church, Atalissa, Iowa, is grieving the loss of “the boys.”
For decades, Henry’s Turkey Service, a Texas company, brought mentally disabled men to work in its Iowa plant.
Six of the 21 men walked to Zion for Sunday school and worship.
But their pew was empty in mid-February after the state whisked them away to a residential care facility in Waterloo, Iowa.
The community was stunned to learn details of the company, which closed in March, and the “deplorable” living conditions of the men’s bunkhouse.
