Carl Segerhammar, 89, former president of the LCA P acific Southwest Synod, died Oct. 22.
Born in Axtell, Kan., Segerhammar was president of the California Conference of the Augsburg Synod for 13 years. When the Lutheran Church in America was formed, he served as synod president f rom 1963 until his retirement in 1975.
Segerhammar received degrees from Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kan., and Augustana Seminary, Rock Island, Ill. He served congregations in Iowa, Colorado and California.
The author of seve ral books and magazine articles, Segerhammar was named 1970 Ecumenical Minister of Los Angeles for his work with interreligious councils.
