Zeroing in on Advent

An ELCA camp helps families prepare for Christmas

Kay Regan and her family won't forget last year's Family Advent Festival at Pine Lake Camp near Waupaca, Wis. For starters, what normally is a two-hour trip from their home in Sheboygan Falls, Wis., to the camp became a six-hour test of endurance as Kay and her children drove in a blizzard of snow and ice. "It was all worth it once we got there," Kay says.

"Our family is active at our church," she says. "The children attend Sunday sc hool and are in the Christmas programs. But the Family Advent Festival did more for my children than all those things. And they want to go again this year."

Kay says her children — Margaret, 15; Molly, 11; Simon, 10; and Madeleine, 6 — each gained an understanding "on their level" of what Christmas is all about. The experience enhanced their Christmas celebration, she says.
