1996 contest finalists tell us how to make friends

The Huffs and other youth were asked how they make new friends feel welcome. The responses to the topic of the 1996 design contest were many and varied.

Through the entries, the youth taught us that we can make people feel we l come by smiling, sharing a crayon or toys, lending a hand, throwing a party, asking them to play, "holding hands at church" and more.

We also learned that friends come in many shapes and sizes — disabled, multicultural, animals and even those of the alien spaceship variety.
