Lobbying Obama on poverty

Leaders of Christian Churches Together in the USA, a 3-year-old ecumenical group that includes the ELCA, met with members of President Barack Obama’s transition team, urging that he make poverty a priority.

They also called on Washington lawmakers to include provisions for the poor in any economic stimulus packages.

“We’ve heard a lot recently about Wall Street and Main Street,” said Sharon Watkins, general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). “Our concern is the people who live on the street or who have no street address.”
