Mark Narum, bishop of Western North Dakota, urged synod congregations to participate in a bone-marrow fundraising and donor drive.
He asked congregations to donate funds to test and add people to the national donor registry or to take part in tissue typing.
Jeff Giles, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, N.D., was diagnosed in 2005 with leukemia.
Although the drive is unlikely to produce a match for Giles, “the people want to do something to say to the whole family, ‘We care,’ ” Narum said.
