Richard John Neuhaus, 72, a Lutheran theologian who left the ELCA in 1990 to become a Roman Catholic priest, died Jan. 8 in Manhattan.
Neuhaus, known for his influential role in the rise of U.S. religious conservatism, was the author of The Naked Public Square (Eerdmans, 1986) and founder of the journal First Things.
An occasional adviser to former President George W. Bush, Neuhaus was listed among the 25 most influential evangelicals in America in 2005.
