Four senators and 13 representatives sworn into office Jan. 6 are members of ELCA congregations.
First-termers are: Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.; and U.S. Reps. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M.; Chellie Pengree, D-Maine; and Marc Schauer, D-Mich.
The senators who returned to their seats are: Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; Byron Dorgan, D-N.D.; and Tim Johnson, D-S.D.
Representatives who won re-electionare: Lois Capps, D-Calif.; John R. Carter, R-Texas; Norman D. Dicks, D-Wash.; Stephanie Herseth, D-S.C.; Tom Latham, R-Iowa; Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif.; Collin C. Peterson, D-Minn.; Thomas Petri, R-Wis.; Bill Shuster, R-Pa.; and Tim Walz, D-Minn.
There also are five representatives who are members of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and two of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod — for a total of 24 Lutherans on Capitol Hill, 4.5 percent of the 535 members.
