The ELCA Justice for Women program encouraged congregations to join together to raise awareness and foster action for National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on Jan. 11.
The U.N. International Labor Organization estimates that 12.3 million people are in forced labor, bonded labor, forced child labor and sexual servitude at any given time.
In 2001 the ELCA Church Council adopted a social message on commercial sexual exploitation in hopes of raising awareness.
