Bethlehem: 23% unemployed

In the Holy Land, residents of Bethlehem saw unemployment improve to 23 percent at the end of 2008.

“While some may gasp at the mention of 23 percent unemployment, when we have witnessed 45 percent unemployment, 23 percent is an improvement,” said Samir Hazboun, chair of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

But residents, 45 percent of whom are Christian, expect the global economic crisis will hit them in 2009, he said.
