Back in 1974 I almost wrote my thesis on “The theology of play.” But I decided otherwise.
However, since those days of theological formation, I’ve been fully aware that we in the church can concentrate too much on God’s work, the work of the Spirit, the work of the church and the good work of our ministry. We do so and totally neglect or intentionally ignore the play that also is a vital dimension of God’s capability and activity.
Given this background, I was disappointed to learn at synod assembly last spring that the theme for the entire ELCA now is “God’s work, our hands.”
