The economic downturn continued to affect ELCA institutions (see also "Seminaries face tough economy") as the board of Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, approved a strategic plan last November that restructures programs and staff.
Although the seminary has seen record growth in enrollment, “the market has hurt us deeply in terms of our endowment values. We’ve suffered a significant decline,” said Duane H. Larson, seminary president.
Program and staff changes will be in place by June 30, and include letting go of three faculty, three full-time staff and two part-time staff. Wartburg will suspend its master of arts in theology, development and education program.
